September 19, 2011 (Regular Meeting) <br />Page 592 <br />NOW THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br />do hereby proclaim October 9 -15, 2011, as <br />DECA Week <br />in Cabarrus County and urge all citizens to become familiar with the services <br />and benefits offered by the DECA chapters at Concord High School and Jay M. <br />Robinson High School and to support and participate in these programs to <br />prepare them for college and professional careers. <br />IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, this 19 day of September, 2011. <br />/s/ H. Jay White, Sr., Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br />C -5) DOC - Proclamation Honorinq the Life of James Roy Davis, Jr. <br />Chairman White announced James Roy Davis, Jr., owner of S & D Coffee, <br />Inc., passed away September 15 He read the proclamation aloud. <br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Carruth, seconded by Vice Chairman Poole <br />and unanimously carried, the Board adopted the following proclamation: <br />Proclamation No. 2011 -11 <br />Proclamation Honoring the Life of James Roy Davis, Jr. <br />Whereas, James Roy Davis, Jr. was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina on <br />November 12, 1933; and <br />Whereas, James Roy Davis, Jr. was a graduate of Concord High School, class of <br />1951; and <br />Whereas, James Roy Davis, Jr. graduated from Davidson College in 1955, Phi <br />Beta Kappa and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity; and <br />Whereas, after college, James Roy Davis, Jr. joined the U.S. Navy where he <br />served as a Supply Officer for three - and -a -half years aboard the U.S. Fiske <br />at Point McGoo in California; and <br />Whereas, James Roy Davis, Jr. returned to Concord to help run the family <br />business, S & D Coffee, Inc., in 1959; and <br />Whereas, James Roy Davis, Jr. married Nan Sue Jones of Charlotte in 1960 and <br />was blessed with two sons and three grandchildren; and <br />Whereas, S & D Coffee, Inc., became a national supplier of tea and coffee <br />under Davis' leadership; and <br />Whereas, James Roy Davis, Jr. was a member of the First Presbyterian Church <br />and served as a past deacon and elder; and <br />Whereas, James Roy Davis, Jr. valued giving back to the community through <br />personal service and financial support; and <br />Whereas, James Roy Davis, Jr. served on the boards of many educational, <br />charitable, cultural and civic organizations and financial institutions; and <br />Whereas, James, Roy Davis, Jr. received many prestigious awards throughout his <br />lifetime; and <br />Whereas, the Davis Theatre in Concord is named after Mr. and Mrs. James Roy <br />Davis, Jr. in honor of their support for the Cabarrus Arts Council; and <br />Whereas, this beloved husband, father, grandfather and civic leader passed <br />away on September 15, 2011 and will be greatly missed by his family, church <br />and community; and <br />NOW THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners hereby extends its <br />sympathy to the Davis family and proclaims September 19, 2011 as "James Roy <br />Davis, Jr." Day in Cabarrus County. <br />Adopted this the 19 day of September, 2011. <br />/s/ H.
