January 19, 2010 (Regular Meeting)
/s/ H. Jay White, Sr.
H. Jay White, Sr., Chairman
Board of Commissioners
ATTEST:
/s/ Kay Honeycutt
Kay Honeycutt, Clerk to the Board
Page 1777
(G-3) BOC - Request for Funds to Accelerate Construction of Hickory Ridge
Middle School - $350,000.00
Chairman White reported he and Vice Chairman Poole attended the Chair,
Vice Chair meeting with the Cabarrus County School system last week. He
stated Cabarrus County Schools requested the Board consider using contingency
funds ($350,000.00) to expedite construction of Hickory Ridge Middle School
so it can open earlier than planned. He noted the middle school is scheduled
to open after school starts; as such, students will have to attend another
school for two weeks and then be transferred to Hickory Ridge Middle. He
advised approving this request will enable the school to be completed two
weeks prior to the start of school (August 25, 2010). He noted the request
does not increase the cost of the building. He reiterated the money would
come from the contingency fund, .which was budgeted. Further, he advised he
received an email from Len Witke, Cabarrus County Schools Director of
Construction Services, requesting the $350,000.00 be expended from the sales
tax credit funds; however, he stressed contingency funds would be better
suited for this request.
Vice Chairman Poole spoke of the importance of completing Hickory Ridge
Middle School by August 11th so School staff can move in prior to the first
day of school on August 25, 2010. She addressed the negative impacts to C.C.
Griffin Middle School and the students if construction of Hickory Ridge is
delayed. She was also in favor of using of project contingency funds instead
of sales tax credit monies for this request.
Vice Chairman Poole MOVED to approve the request to accelerate the
construction of Hickory Ridge Middle School with the understanding that the
funds come out of the contingency fund; and that School staff stay
continually abreast of the situation and contact the County Finance
Department with any concerns. Commissioner Privette seconded the motion.
After it was clarified that no new monies are being requested, the
MOTION unanimously carried.
(H) APPOINTMENTS
(H-1) Appointment/Removal - Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee
Mr. Randall (Randy) Peterman has submitted an application to serve on
the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee and was prequalified by the
regional Ombudsman.
