<br />May I, 2006 - Agenda Work Session <br /> <br />Page <br /> <br />580 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the motorsports industry has a tremendous economic impact on <br />Cabarrus County, the region and the entire State of North Carolina, totaling <br />more than $5.9 billion; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the 47th running of the Coca-Cola 600 will be held on May 28, <br />2006, at Lowe's Motor Speedway; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, thousands of race fans from all 50 states and several foreign <br />countries travel annually to Cabarrus County to attend the Coca-Cola 600 and <br />participate in the many race-related activities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the events leading up to the Coca-Cola 600 will bring much <br />recognition to Cabarrus County and the region as Lowes Motor Speedway plans <br />spectacular entertainment including the premiere of Disney. Pixar' s newest <br />animated feature "CARS.Y <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners hereby proclaims <br />May 21 - 28, 2006, as <br /> <br />COCA-COLA 600 WEEK <br /> <br />in Cabarrus County in recognition of the importance of the motorsports <br />industry to our community, and encourages all citizens to support and <br />participate in the many activities planned throughout the week in celebration <br />of the Coca-Cola 600. <br /> <br />This the l.t day of May, 2006. <br /> <br />/s/ Robert W. Carruth <br />Robert Carruth, Chairman <br />Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners <br /> <br />Recognition of Boy Scout <br /> <br />Chairman Carruth recognized Boy Scout Christopher Ashworth, who was in <br />the audience. He stated Christopher was working on a merit badge. <br /> <br />Mission Statements <br /> <br />John Day, County Manager, stated sample mission statements and core <br />values had been provided to the Board as a follow-up from the March retreat. <br /> <br />By consensus, the Board agreed to discuss possible mission statements <br />as part of the budget process. <br /> <br />Human Services Building - Renovations to DaB Lobby and Workspaces <br /> <br />Jim Cook, Social Services Director, advised that the increase in the <br />number of cases in recent years had resulted in the overcrowding of the <br />Department of Social Service (DSS) lobby. Also, he stated renovating and <br />expanding the lobby would help the work flow as well. <br /> <br />Mike Downs, Deputy County Manager, reported proposals to perform the <br />architectural and engineering services needed to renovate the DBB lobby were <br />requested in February 2006 with two local firms responding. The proposals <br />were reviewed and the firm of Yates, Chreitzberg, and Hughes Architects was <br />recommended for this project. <br /> <br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Privette, seconded by Commissioner <br />Carpenter and unanimously carried, the Board voted to place the renovations <br />to the DSS lobby and workspaces on the May 15, 2006 Agenda as a Consent item. <br /> <br />Resolution Supporting State Assumption of County Share of Medicaid <br /> <br />Chairman Carruth reviewed a resolution from Haywood County supporting <br />State Assumption of County Share of Medicaid. He proposed that the Board <br />consider a similar resolution with Cabarrus County statistics at the May 15th <br />meeting. <br /> <br />UPON MOTION of Commissioner Privette, seconded by Commissioner Freeman <br />and unanimously carried, the Board voted to place a "Resolution Supporting <br />State Assumption of County Share of Medicaid" on the May 15, 2006 Agenda as a <br />New Business item. <br /> <br />Land for Tomorrow - Resolution Supporting Legislation Authorizing November <br />2006 Bond Referendum to Increase Conservation Spending in North Carolina by <br />$1 Billion <br />
